We really hope not, but I guess the better answer in this case might be “Maybe”. In 2017, US Soccer began using birth year registration, as opposed to school year (Sept. 1st cutoff), to fall in line with the rest of the soccer world. This is complicated a bit by the fact that in our local recreation program we don’t have a different division for each birth year, but combine 2 years at a time to be able to have more players/teams in each division. This usually allows our teams to only have to play each other 2-3 times in a season and not weekly.
Birth Year Registration for 2020 Rec Season Explained!!
U6 – Birth Year 2015 and 2016 – i.e. 4-5 year olds (3 yr old if born Sept-Dec)
U8 – Birth Year 2013 and 2014 – i.e. 6-7 year olds (5 yr old if born Sept-Dec)
U10 – Birth Year 2011 and 2012 – i.e. 8-9 year olds (7 yr old if born Sept-Dec)
U13 – Birth Year 2008/2009/2010 – i.e. 10-12 year olds (9 yr old if born Sept-Dec)
We do hope this brings some clarity to the way that the teams are divided.
Thanks,
